Grecanico grapes - reference: http://www.vitisdb.it

The Grecanico is a group of Sicilian autochthonous white grapes vines whose origin can be considered common to many grapes in southern Italy, introduced by Greek colonizers in the VII century BC. There are no written information about this vine until late Renaissance; in 1696, Cupani mentioned a vine calling it Grecani. In 1835, Abbot Geremia described it in his essay "Stafulegrafia" pointing out the location in Randazzo and in general in the whole Trapani territory.

It’s a perfect vine for qualities designations, thanks to high-quality and aromatic wines provided that let it can have today a revival, such as a new Renaissance, among producers and consumers. We can distinguish two main clones differing in density of the cluster: the loosely-packed bunch cultivated in Trapani territory, and the tight, diffused in all western and eastern Sicily. The vine, which complete name is Grecanico Dorato (Golden Grecanico), has cylindrical and lengthened clusters with wings, medium-big berries, rounded with thick golden peel; that is the reason for its name. The ripening is medium-late, harvest time in early October. The Grecanico conquered many Sicilian origin designations and It’s in many Disciplinarians.
